How to Train a Beagle

I think one of the reasons Beagles are so popular is because they are some of the cutest puppies. Big eyes, tail wagging, full of happiness, they seem to make the perfect family pet. They are great dogs but being from the hound group they are always ready to roam. If you like to hunt and are an active family the beagle may be right for you.

Being hunting dogs beagles are easily distracted and ready to take off through the yard. It can be difficult to get your beagles attention when you are outside. Keeping your beagle on a long line when you are outside is a good idea.

The first step is to give your beagle plenty of exercise. Bring your beagle hiking, walking, swimming, etc. A beagle that is full of energy can wreak havoc inside the household. Chewing, digging, and destructive behavior can result from a beagle having too much pent up energy.

I would also strongly recommend getting a fence or an underground electronic fence. Being hunting dogs beagles love to roam, the last thing you'd want to happen is your beagle getting lost, injured or worse.

Establish yourself as the leader. Beagles need leadership and structure. When you establish leadership your beagle will feel more secure and listen to your commands much better.

Start training early; you can start as young as eight weeks old. Teach sit, down, stand, stay, come and heel. Spend time working on come. This is an extremely important command for your beagle to learn. As I stated earlier in the article using a long line is a good idea when you are outside. the long line can be used to keep your dog near you and to get your beagle to come back when you call "Come."
